Background of the Study
Urbanization is rapidly transforming economic and social landscapes, with traditional markets facing significant pressures to adapt (Uche, 2023). In Onitsha South, the rapid expansion of urban infrastructure has altered consumer behavior and challenged the sustainability of longstanding market practices (Okafor, 2024). Traditional markets, once the economic lifeline of communities, now compete with modern retail outlets and face issues such as inadequate space, infrastructural decay, and changing customer preferences (Ifeanyi, 2023). Recent studies indicate that urbanization can lead to both the decline of traditional markets and the emergence of hybrid market models that blend modern and traditional elements (Chukwu, 2025). This study investigates the multifaceted effects of urbanization on traditional markets in Onitsha South, exploring how these markets evolve amid rapid urban growth and what this means for cultural and economic continuity (Nwachukwu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
The process of urbanization in Onitsha South has disrupted traditional market operations, resulting in reduced patronage and infrastructural challenges (Eze, 2023). As modern retail formats gain prominence, traditional markets struggle to maintain their relevance and adapt to evolving consumer needs (Akinola, 2024). The lack of comprehensive studies on this phenomenon hinders the formulation of policies aimed at preserving the cultural and economic significance of these markets (Okeke, 2023). This study aims to address this research gap by examining the impact of urbanization on traditional market sustainability.
